We're Going to the Fair...

Even though we have lived here for more than seven years, and we love the fair, we had never gone to the Utah State Fair. So, this year, we decided to take the plunge. James is old enough now to really enjoy it and he was thrilled to see what it was all about. We were joined by our friends Bronze, Symoni, and Mirai.
Love that James looks like he should be "Wanted". Hilarious!
The kids had such a great time checking out all of the animals in the livestock areas and there was a little pond where they could fish until they caught something. James had never gone fishing before, so he was pretty excited.
Getting a little help from a professional
Look at the size of that catch!
Mirai agreed to "touch" the fish
This fair is a small fraction of the size of the Florida State Fair, but there were still plenty of fun things to do. And fair food. Yay, footlong corn dogs and elephant ears! We took the kids on the ferris wheel and then they chose one other ride. Some spinning sort of a ride. Chris was the only adult willing to endure that, so thanks, Chris!
Bronze got this great shot of them laughing. So sweet!

Odds and Ends

There are some cute recent pictures that didn't really warrant a post of their own. So, I decided to throw together a little miscellaneous post with all of them. Enjoy the randomness.
Chris taught James how to blow in the bottle.
So great having multiple pictures of your child
with a beer bottle in his hand.
Chris and James built this box together in the workshop.
He's super excited about it!
A boy who loves "mighty machines"
can't resist an opportunity such as this.
James went to a pirate-themed camp one day.
The beard makes me giggle.
Love those big brown eyes!
Chris took James to a Disney Junior live show downtown
and they took the train. James was clearly
 thrilled when it arrived.
I love these sweet moments with James and Leo.
They are usually followed by raucous playing and screaming.
He still loves to drive his car, and takes it very seriously,
as you can see from his expression.
Leo is ready for the Bucs to win a game. Any game.
They found that they had accidentally dressed alike.
How cute are they?!

A Dream Come True!

Many of you know what a fan I am of James Taylor. He was one of my mother's favorites and I grew up listening to his records (that's right, records!) and singing along. When our son was born, his unofficial theme song was Sweet Baby James, and he is still known as SBJ in some circles (you know who you are). However, of all the concerts I have been to in my life, and there are many, I had never seen him perform. I am a fan on Facebook and they posted a note about James coming to SLC to do a special concert with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony. The tickets were free but you had to win them in a lottery. I never win anything. Seriously, I am hugely unlucky. However, you can't win if you don't enter, so I did. AND I WON!!!!!
The tickets are sent to you in the mail and they assign your seats. When we arrived and were making our way to our seats, we just kept getting closer and closer to the stage. I couldn't believe it! Not only did I win free tickets to an unbelievable concert, but our seats were amazing. We were maybe 24 rows from the stage in a huge auditorium. I almost cried with joy. Almost. Actual tears came later.
It was a great concert and James is so wonderful live. Chris and I were a little disappointed that Sweet Baby James was not on the program, but we were so grateful to be there that we focused on that. Then, he played it as an encore and I felt like all the stars aligned in that moment to make me so crazy happy. I cried like a baby. Because I'm a sap and I miss my mom and wish she knew my little James.
On the plus side, after climbing a mountain and seeing James Taylor live, I'm going to have to add some new adventures to my bucket list. They're getting checked off pretty quickly for someone who's only 34!

iPhone selfie before the concert. I toned down the giant grin I had been wearing.
Pretty sure I'm thinking, "I can't believe I'm here!"
OMG it's James Taylor! I swear it is, even though this pic is terrible. It really is!

Climb Every Mountain

That was for all you Sound of Music fans... you're welcome.

On August 31, 2013, Chris and I climbed to the top(ish) of Mt. Timpanogos. It was an elevation change of 4,400 feet to reach the top at 11, 060 feet. 12 miles of hiking and the most physically demanding and exhausting thing we have ever done! The skies turned dark as we got closer to the top and we were rained on and then hailed on. Luckily, it was small hail as there was nowhere to shelter. It took us about 6 hours to get up (with a small break for lunch), but only 3 1/2 to get down. We practically ran down the mountain, mostly because all I could think about was going home and eating an enormous dinner, having a drink or two, and getting in the hot tub! What an experience, though. It was something we had wanted to do for a long time but just hadn't gotten to. And now we have. Check!
Looking up at mountains we will eventually be looking down on
The trail winds its way up and around the peak at the far right
A smile on the trail before we were too exhausted for facial expressions
Lovely little waterfall along the way
Getting closer...
WE DID IT!!!!!
A panoramic from the top. Note the clouds actually on the peak on the right. We were high.
A momma and baby mountain goat (center of pic) keeping us company on the way down.
Maybe the daddy mountain goat. It was amazing to watch him move so sure-footed up there.
For perspective, this is the view from our driveway and the arrow shows where we hiked to.
